Subject: Solaris 8 and Windows XP |
Comment: Hi I have a box with Solaris 8 in Secondary IDE and Windows XP in primary IDE. i have to switch the cable to use the different OS. I dont have another box. So when i work in Xp i have to disable the Solaris HDD and same with Solaris. Is there any way i can use the Solaris while i am working with XP like vmware. i guess vmware is for Linux and Windows.

Reply: (edit)I have Solaris 8 runs in the same machine as Windows xp does, those OSes reside on the same phisical drive, but different partition. You have to install the XP first, the the Solaris. At the end of Solaris installation, it will be asked whether you want to enable the multiple boots. Hope it helps. cni

Reply: (edit)Solaris 8 and Windows XP On Same HD! Bud. You said you had Windows XP then you installed Solaris 8 on another partition? How did you go about creating the partition or partitions(Swap) for Solaris. Because it requires it's own "Solaris fdisk partition" On a 40Gig HD, I currently have WIndows ME(FAT32) in first Primary partition. I have Windows XP(NTFS) in the Second Primary partition. And Have a logical partition for just storage. I created all the partitions easily using Partition Magic 7.0. I Want to install Solaris 8 on the Third Primary Partition that I will create. How do I create this as sun says "Solaris fdisk partition." As Partition Magic is no help here because the solaris installer kept saying "no proper disk drives found." And I simply had to install it on a older smaller 3 gig drive. Please someone help!

Reply: (edit)Guys, forget about the trash talk, now listen to this! Use partition magic under Windows to create a blank partition (at least 2GB) for Solaris. Also if you want your Solaris to share data with WinXP, create a Fat16 Partition NOW! (you won't be able to do it with PQMagic after Solaris is installed!) Then, have Solaris 8 software CD 1 handy (Not the Setup CD!). Restart your PC, under CMOS change settings to have your CDRom as the first booting device. Restart again and Solaris installation will start. At some point where it asks for installation location, you get to choose the blank partition you created very easily. After the solaris is installed, you will have multi-boot with WinXP BY DEFAULT. Good luck!

Reply: (edit)You can also install VMware Workstation 3.0 and have Solaris as a Guest OS. Check this url. http://computing.net/solaris/wwwboard/forum/545.html
