Subject: trying to boot from cdrom |
Comment: I have an SUN Ultra 5 machine the current hard drive has an Windows NT load. I purchased Solaris ver. 2.5 and have the solaris Desktop ver. 1.1 cd in the cdrom. When I try to "STOP + A" all I get is "Bad magic number in disk label package. Boot device: net File and args: Timeout waiting for ARP/RARP packet." I should say that I'm a total newbee here and any advice/help is highly appreciated. thx Scott

Reply: "Stop+A" should drop you to the Open Boot PROM (OBP) prompt (currently "ok"). Do you see this behavior? If not, then what follows will probably be of no help to you. At the PROM prompt, you should be able to type "boot cdrom" (without quotes) and press the Enter key: ok boot cdrom BTW: the text "net file and args" makes me think your PROM is currently configured to boot from the network by default. You can review this setting (and many others) by typing "printenv" at the PROM prompt. re: http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/General/OBP.html

Reply: Ok cool I've set my boot-device to cdrom and now all I get is "Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@2,0:f File and args: Can't read disk label. Can't open disk label package Can't open boot device ok" Its almost like the cdrom is not being recognized, but probe-disks shows that it is. I'm totally stumpped. Any other sugestions would be highly appreciated thx.

Reply: I kind of had a similar problem. Let me see if I can help. Have you tried to reformat the drive? I know sometimes the Solaris install has a problem with previously installed OS on a drive. Try that and do the STOP A and the boot CDROM command and see what happens.

Reply: also have a problem booting cd on ultra 5 updated flsh prom to v 3.31, same result im trying to install solaris 8. from "stop A", gets the OK, I then type boot CD It looks like it restarts, tries to read the cd, and comes back and says the file loaded doesn't appear to be executable....whats wrong? the hard disk currently has solaris 5.7, and boots. I don't care if this disk is wiped and would prefer to start fresh anyway. How do I get this thing to boot off the CD??? HELP! Thanks

Reply: I'm still having the same problem as berton a sparc ultra 10. I already tryed to change the cd rom (ide), i changed to master or cable select but i still cant boot from solaris 8 cd install. I also read somewhere that this is a common problem with the install disk and then the suggestion is to boot from software disk 1... but this still doesnt boot. BUT if i use the original boot disk of solaris 2.6 the cd boot and install the system. Maybe mine is a problem of *cd burning* (i download the iso from sun and burn them with cdrecord, lin slack). My question is: if i have a working 2.6 system is there a way to install sol 8 without booting from the cd? thanks everyone in advance
