I typically run with "Show hidden Files and Folders" enabled. Today I was trying to clean up my temp folder and all hidden files were hidden. When I went to correct the problem I found I couldn't. The "Folder Options" Option at the bottom of the "Tools" menu had disappeared on every file folder opened.

I went to the control panel and optioned "Folder Options" from there. Clicking on the "View" tab I discovered that the option to "Show hidden files and folders" had somehow disappeared. It is typically displayed inside a folder, in that tab, that says "Hidden files and folders" on the "View" tab. That entire folder was gone.

I have several computers - all of them running Windows 2000 - and all the other computers display "Folder Options" on the Tools menu and has the "Show hidden files and folders" both visible and enabled.

I thought I might have somehow "slipped" out of administrator" mode, so I tried both logging on as "Administrator" and as a new user I created as an adminstrator. In both cases nothing changed. I went back to the view tab and tried both the "Reset all Folders" button and the "Restore Defaults" button, both to no effect.

Can anyone offer further suggestions for how to regain control of showing hidden folders.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Harry

Thanks for suggestion. I tried it, but it didn't work.

When I entered it from the command prompt it returned: Not resetting system file c:/Documents and Settings\Harry\ntuser.ini.

That result prompted some further investigation. First I made sure that I had set the option to display "protected system files" was set to display them. It was.

Next I opened the "c:/Documents and Settings\Harry" folder to see what was there. The file ntuser.ini was NOT displayed. I went to a computer networked to that computer and opened the same folder via the network. ntuser.ini WAS displayed along with several other files and folders so all the folders and files were there, just not visible. I could even open the ini file and see that it was exactly the same as the one on the networked computer that is acting properly.

In other words: I still have the original problem - the option to show hidden files/folders does not display. But, also setting the system to display protected system files is visible but doesn't change the actual setting.

I always run as an admin so it's not a case of being in user mode. Any further suggestions.

Thanks again for trying.

Harry

Ok, I think I found the answer. You have to remove the system flag at the same time.

For example:
attrib -s -h c:\ntldr

Try that.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

I DID manage this time to make the file ntuser.ini to become visible but I can't seem to do so for the sub-folders inside my folder in the Documents and Settings Folder.

I tried the following: "attrib -s -h /s" where I hoped the "/s" would mean all sub-directories and files within the current directory, but it had no effect.

Is there another way to do it?

Try /S /D with the rest of the command. If not, I think you'll have to CD to each direstory and run the command.
