Subject: How to add DHCP SVR to W2K Domain?
OS: Win 2000
CPU/Ram: 600/256
Manufacturer/Model: asus
Comment:

I want to add a DHCP Server to my W2K Domain. I presently have a W2K Server and a few W2K Prof clients. The server has DNS, RIS, RRAS/NAT (NAT acting as DHCP server) installed. I want to have a seperate DHCP server so I can use RIS/RIPrep iamges to install new client OS's, and also to give ip addresses to clients. When I had DHCP installed on the server originally RIS had problems. So i want to have a seperate DHCP server on this private network.
To set up this DHCP server, do I install Win2000 Server on a new computer, make it a DHCP server and configure it accordingly, and just add it to the domain just like i would add a client computer?
Will this DHCP server be considered a Member Server?
Is it better to have DHCP on a seperate system or on the same system when using RIS?

You must authorize the DHCP server within Active Directory.

I authorize the DHCP server from the DHCP server? I don't authorize it FROM the Active Directory on the Domain Controller?

yes, i understand the steps to authorize the DHCP server, but I am confused by the AD part. Since the DHCP server is seperate from the DC/AD computer, I authorize the DHCP server from the DHCP server not from the DC/AD computer?

But i have to join the DHCP server to the domain first?

How do you understand the steps to authorizing a DHCP server if you are unsure where to do it, if the DHCP needs to be a member server, etc.?

Time to go read!

my Win 2000 Server DC/AD computer is not going to be the DHCP server, I have a seperate Win2000 Server that is going to be the DHCP server for this domain!

When I go to the Win 2000 DC/AD Server computer to authorize the 2nd Win 2000 Server that is runner DHCP server for the domain, there is no DHCP snap in on the Win 2000 DC/AD Server since the DHCP component is not installed on this DC/AD server!!

Do I authorize DHCP server from the Win 2000 Server running DHCP, or from the Win 2000 DC/AD Server not running the DHCP service??

I can't authorize it from the Win 2000 DC/AD server because the DHCP component is not installed, since I am not using this server as a DHCP server I did not install DHCP on the DC/AD server.

The process to authorize the DHCP server is easy, but I am confused on wich computer to authorize it from!!
From the computer running the DHCP service? or From the Win 2000 DC/AD Server not running the DHCP service (thus not having a DHCP snap-in)?

The first and second link in the google search explains all this, even the scenario if you don't join the DHCP to your domain.

It's all there.

Big hint: The directions say nothing about which machine you use to pull up DHCP MMC, so do you think it matters as long as you config the MMC to point to the DHCP server to interface with?
