Subject: Unknown PCI Device after Win2000 upgrade
Comment:

After I upgraded my computer from Windows 98 to Windows 2000, A 'PCI Device' with the exclamation point by it is now in the 'Other Devices' section in 'Device Manager'. When I check the properties of this device it says that "the drivers are not installed for this device (Code 28)". This device's location is 'PCI bus 0, device 31, function 3'.

I disabled this device because I didn't know what it was or where drivers would be for it, and it doesn't appear to be causing any problems. But, I would like to get rid of it if possible.

Any response would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Usually this is for the modem.Pick reinstall drivers and point to the modem drivers.
It will then find a modem and install the drivers itself.

I probably should have made it known what I have installed - a network card, video card, and sound card, no modem.

Not knowing the system components this is only a guess (from experience) if your main board has the capability of supporting multiple processors (SMB, aka SMBus headers/blocks)W2k will attempt to install a devices to support the feature. The system location 'PCI bus 0, device 31, function 3', is consistent what I have seen. The SMBus device is related to the ACPI features supported by W2k. You may also notice the device has an I/O address of something like 5000-500f but the resources are reported as unavailable w/no solution to-date. If this fits check w/the board mfg or chip set mfg for a driver.

I recently upgraded my OS from Windows ME to Windows 2000. After reading the above messages, I downloaded the latest chipset driver and installed it. However, each time that I boot, the Found New Hardware wizard appears asking about an unknown PCI device, which I cancel out. Needless to say, I would prefer not having to do anything in this situation. (See Device List below.)

My computer specs are:

In addition, after the upgrade, my HP PSC 500 (all-in-one) printer stopped working. An HP techie walked me through the reinstallation of the printer driver to no avail.

Suggestions regarding either or both problems are greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem and downloaded the chipset drivers and this problem went away.
