Subject: Unknown PCI Device in Windows 2000 |
Comment: I have installed Windows 2000 in my system. When it boots up, it detects a PCI Device which I have no idea what it is. Windows 2000 cannot find a driver for it. I have a PCI modem, PCI LAN card, PCI sound card, and PCI graphic card. All of these are installed correctly. So I have no idea what this unknown PCI device is!!! I have using ASUS CUSL2-C motherbord and Pentium III 1G CPU. Please help!

Reply: How many PCI slots are you taking up? I would imagine that your mobo only has 5 PCI slots and a ISA slot. Check your Device manager by right-clicking My Computer, Properties. Device manager is in one of those tabs. Check your devices that you listed above. If one of those is missing, than it is that device and you need to find drivers for it on the Internet.

Reply: It could be a device on your MB that is enabled but unknown to Windows 2000. Check th settings on your MB....you may have a onboard sound or modem or lan that should be turned off if your not using it.

Reply: no no fellas. Just uninstall and take out all the pci cards except for the video. First check to see if the unknown pci device is still listed. If it is not listed, install each pci card 1 at a time until you find the one it cant install drivers for. Bingo thats the one!! Also make sure all your cards support irq sharing. I think a couple of the pci slots share an irq.

Reply: I have the same problem, even after removing all of the PCI cards. I am suspecting the USB Daughter Card the uses one of the case slots but connects directly to the MB.

Reply: I also have the same problem with an Pentium III 1000MHz desktop PC. The only pci device is an Intel NIC, all the rest is onboard. The motherboard is an Asus TUSL2 board. Let the search continue!

Reply: Check out this article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q298837 ...it's for win98/me but I have 2000 and was able to find the registry entry by searching for "unknown" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE...it took several "re-finds" (F3) but I was eventually able to ID it by the location that I found in the General tab in Device Manager (in my case it was PCI bus 0, device 31, function 3). If windows can't find the device it's most likely a system-level device (ie motherboard-related). I was able to resolve my problem by running some inf updates from the CD that shipped with my motherboard (duh - I totally forgot to do this after I loaded up 2000).
