Subject: Windows 2000 upgrade and Unknown PCI Dev
Comment:

I recently upgraded my OS from Windows ME to Windows 2000. After reading the above messages, I downloaded the latest chipset driver and installed it. However, each time that I boot, the Found New Hardware wizard appears asking about an unknown PCI device, which I cancel out. Needless to say, I would prefer not having to do anything in this situation. (See Device List below.)
My computer specs are:

In addition, after the upgrade, my HP PSC 500 (all-in-one) printer stopped working. An HP techie walked me through the reinstallation of the printer driver to no avail.

Suggestions regarding either or both problems are greatly appreciated.

Is the problem device listed in device manager as a pci simple communications controller?
The list does not show a modem. If so that is possibly the problem device. In device manager, pick the problem PCI device and tell it to reinstall drivers, then point it to the modem drivers. If this is in fact the problem device, after it loads the drivers it will find and install the modem.
If you are familiar enough to get into the BIOS change the LPT port to either EPP or bidirectional to see if it solves the printer problem. If not you can always change it back to ECP.

Thanks for the suggestions. Regarding the modem, I use a Westell DSL modem from Verizon. I'm not sure if that makes any difference to your advice.

I'll see if changing the LPT port has any effect. The instructions from HP for my particular printer specifically called for setting the port to ECP under Windows 2000, but since HP "forgot" to include the driver with Win2000, maybe your suggestion will work.

Thanks.
