Subject: CAL: win 2003 server vs 200o server
OS: win 2000

Manufacturer/Model: asus
Comment:

I have presently a Win2000 DC server with terminal
service (remote admin mode) , no client access licenses
ever purchased, all users log in with no problems into the
domain and terminal service.

I want to install Win2003 server with the same setup as
Win 2000.

here are my questions:

Does Win2003 server need a CAL for a user to just log
into the domain?

does a user need CAL to use terminal service in remote
admin mode?

or are these CAL wether its for per user or per server only
used for access to a terminal service server session?

Yes. But if it's a licensed copy of the OS, it has a license. Unless you do a "Per Seat" licence, then can only connect that many clients.

No because the system doesn't need to be on the domain to access a server through terminal services.

"or are these CAL wether its for per user or per server only used for access to a terminal service server session?"

Be default only 2 concurrent terminal sessions can run on a server without buying additional licenses.

I have a Win2000 Server (unregistered) domain at home, a
Win2000Pro client (not registered) and a WinXP pro client
(registered,activated).
I could log into the domain from both clients with no
problems, I have not set up any licenses either on the
server or the clients. I also have Terminal Services
installed on the server and I use the RDP/RDC from the
clients to access the server with no problems. This is just
an at home network used for learning purposes.
I want to upgrade from Win2000Server to 2003 server but
I am worried about this licensing stuff!! Since this is just
and at home LAN domain that I am learning to administer.

I want to have Terminal Services installed on the 2003
server also but in Remote Admin mode.

what licenses do i need, if any, for the clients and/or the
server?

With Terminal Service on Win2000Server I did not set up
any licenses for TS.

Okay. Do you have a eval copy of 2003 Server?

Or do you have a copy of 2003 server with a regular key?

If you have a regular key, then you don't need to worry about licensing. Product does not need to be "registered" with microsoft.

If you have a eval copy of 2003 server then it will stop working after 30 days. Still no extra licensing required.

I have a Win2003Server with a cd-key, I have not installed it yet on any computer. Presently I am using a Win2000Server computer as the Domain controller, with DNS, NAT, and Terminal Services installed and running.

No licensing has ever been done for clients to use any service. (Win2000Pro and WinXP Pro clients)

I am confused with this Win2003Server licensing!!

If I install Win2003Server, will the clients each need to have a CAL (user or device) to just access the Win2003 Server to?

If i do not install Terminal Services on the 2003 Server then I have no reason to worry about Terminal Services Licensing??

This is a home learning network, i never bought any licensing for the present Win2000Server domain controller and its clients , I want this Win2003Server to have the same services (DNS, NAT, Terminal Service) as the Win2000Server, but i am unclear if i can get away with installing this 2003Server without having to get either Terminal Services Client Access Licenses and/or Win2003 Server CAL??

Will I need a license for both Win2003Server for clients to just access the server?
and another license for Win2003Server Terminal services?
