Subject: file permissions for domain users
OS: Windows Server 2003
CPU/Ram: 3g
Manufacturer/Model: Hp
Comment:

On one server in our network, ntfs permissions cannot be set for domain users. The server is part of a domain, but on the location field when adding a user only the server is displayed. It is not possible to select another location (no other locations appear). Typing in domain\user gives an error that it is not found. This only affects one server. How can it be rectified?

Is the server on the Domain? What are the share permissions?

Yes the server is on the domain, and share permissions are everyone full control. Restrictions are by ntfs permissions.

When you push "Add..." check the locations field for your domain name. By default only DC's and workstations will have that as the domain name. Member servers will always have their local user/groups set as the search location.

That isn't true at all. If the server is part of the domain, the domain will be listed.

I'm guessing the DNS settings on that server are incorrect and it can't contact a domain controller.

Make sure the DNS settings are pointing to a valid DC and you should be fine.
