We have an existing domain - of which I am the admin. We have 2 domain controllers running 2003 standard. I was out of the office for 2 weeks and someone bought a new server with SBS 2003 on it, and installed it into this domain - to be used as a voicemail server - it is in production already. We also have a seperate exchange 2007 server, and dns servers, etc. Can I do an inplace upgrade of this box to windows server 2003 standard? I really dont want all my eggs in one basket with this SBS box hosting all the operations masters.

We have plenty of licenses - so thats not an issue.. and we are not running exchange/sql/or anything else on this SBS box. God only knows why they bought it.

I didn't think you could add a SBS to an existing forest.

Only way I know you could add those 2003 dc to the sbs forest would have been to dcpromo down your entire forest and then join the former DCs to the SBS forest of the same name.

Does it actually exist as a AD object as seen from one of the 2003 DCs?
Does it have a dns entry on ms dns server?
Have you confirmed that none of the 2003 Dc's contain any fsmo roles?

Yes, the box shows up in DNS and is a member of the existing domain/forest.. it shows up as a domain controller in the domain controllers OU. The SBS box does not have all of the roles - it is not the RID master nor is it the infrastructure master. It is, however, a GC. It was my understanding that it wouldnt even work properly unless it had all roles. anyway - is there any way that i can just run the 2003 r2 server standard setup on this box and 'upgrade' it?

Unfortunately I wasnt asked my advise about installing the server, and they just went out and bought SBS OEM and installed it in the network. Everything works great - and we have quite a few more than 75 users. I dont want to lose the box - but i if i have to, I will reinstall.

--another thing, it doesnt appear as the box was setup as a the licensing server for the domain either.. that may be why things are working okay for now. maybe the best way is to rip this thing out of the domain and reinstall.

There is no 'upgrade' of SBS that I am aware of. I think removing it from the forest, seizing the fsmo roles and then reinstalling it as 2003 member server would be the way to go.

Sure would like to know how they managed to add it to the existing forest.

I know how to add other 2003 DCs to a SBS forest but not the other way around.

There is a transition pack you can aquire from MS to migrate your SBS domain to a 2003 domain. Alternatively you could use the swing migration by Jeff Middleton and SBS MVP which is far better than the MS equivalent.
