Subject: Phase 2 - adding DNS and DHCP 03OS: 2003 Server R2CPU/Ram: Dual CoreManufacturer/Model: PE 2900 |
Comment: I recently added a new 2003 Server to our existing 2000 domain. We only had one DC and it holds our AD/DNS/DHCP services. I finally got approval to purchase a new server for redundancy, so I was able to install AD on our new 2003 server and now I am going to add DNS and DHCP for redundancy. What steps are needed if any. I know when I added AD for the 2003 server I had to run ADPREP and DCPROMO, is there anything I must run before I add the DNS and DHCP services? Also I have never setup DNS or DHCP, I see all the settings are in place in our existing server. Do the settings transfer over from the original once DNS and DHCP are installed. Sorry for all the questions, I'm just new to administrating a network.

Reply: If the DNS zone on the old server is active directory integrated, and you install the dns service from the add/remove programs control panel applet on the new DC, then it will automatically transfer. If it isn't you'll have to set up the new one as a secondary dns zone and allow the old to to do zone transfers to the new one. It's pretty easy to do, but i'd recomend making it active directory integrated if possible, which there really shouldn't be a reason you couldn't. It stores it more securely.
