Subject: Point domain towards IP?OS: Windows Server 2003CPU/Ram: 512Manufacturer/Model: HP |
Comment: Hi, I made a post awhile back (http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-2003/domain-and-dns/8157.html). Sorry for not replying but I went on vacation for two weeks the day after and wasn't able to get back to this subject until just now. Anyway, I probably should of cleared this up but I'm very experienced with server setup. Though, I've only set up servers via remote desktop (virtual private servers) or on my local network. I decided I'm tired of having to call tech support when my server goes down and would rather just host myself and my clients from home. I now know I need to contact my ISP and order a static IP address. Though I'm a little confused on how I would go about pointing my domain to that IP. With VPS and Shared Hosting I simply typed in the nameserver1.host.com on my namecheap.com account to transfer the domain. I assume I'll have set up a name server in order to point my domain to my IP, right? My question is how do I do this? Thanks for the help again!

Reply: You simply require a A record on a "PUBLIC" DNS server located on the internet. You dont necessarily have to use a static address although this is advised if you have services such as mail websites etc on the server. If your looking for a free solution try no-ip or dyndns.org. Both sites can be used to create a A record that will point to your external IP address and also have clients that can update your public IP if it is dynamic. If you require a specific namespace then simply contact a host provider find out if the domain name is free and buy it.Go into your control panel and then configure your A record/s. Reply: Negative. That its not possible and not necessary. The ones i have suggested are free and more over buying a domain name is cheap and easy. You can create your own DNS that will be authoritative for your OWN domain/network. Your DNS will then make a recursive query to root hint or public DNS servers located on the internet when it cannot find a record in its database/cache.Your IP address is a PUBLIC IP address. In order to achieve name resolution you MUST use a DNS server located on the internet to resolve the "public" name back to its IP address. SBS Specialist extraordinaire!!
