I apologize. do you know if there is a way to have a windows 2003 server send an e-mail if/when it receives an error any where in event viewer? or more specifically in Event viewer\system?

Its not possible with windows 2003 natively. BUT Vista and Windows 2008 support this feature.

we are running a server 2003 box for our exchange server and the other day i tried to install updates on this box and while trying to run updates the server stopped some services unexpectedly. which caused an e-mail to be sent out with the following.

MAILSERVER has reported a Error. Reported status is:
Queues - Unknown
Drives - Unknown
Services - Error
Memory - Unknown
CPU - Unknown

does any one know how this e-mail was sent and how I go about checking to see where it is pulling this information?

Those are the WMI filters. If you go to Exchange Server manager and open up notifications you will see the entries in there. They have to be entered manually so i presume the previous admin did them before yourself. The WMI is fairly handy but it only gives you basic info on the status of your exchange server in relation to queues disk space services running etc.

If you click status in ESM and go to the properties of the mail server in question you will see what services are being monitored.
