I'm trying to bring up Windows Server 2008 to verify that a software product I have still works there, but basic networking functions I'm used on Windows Server 2003 don't seem to be around - things like My Network Places, where I can right-click, Search for Computers, and find another computer on the LAN.

My 2008 server is connected to a LAN and gets out to the Internet ok. And other computers on the LAN can find the 2008 server (by right-clicking Search for Computers and entering the computer's name) but I don't see any way to get the 2008 server to find other computers.

I know this is basic and I'm overlooking something, but could someone perhaps point me in the right direction and save me reading through a bunch of 500-page 2008 books?

Thanks for any help.

I'm not really sure, but is win 2008 server running a firewall by default?
And as I know, Microsoft had learned a bit of networking and firewalling and sets firewall to deny all and only let traffic pass thru, which has been permitted by the administrator.

Did you checked that?

You can setup the WINS server on win 2008 machine and connect all PCs to it to create a centralized user PCs list
