I'm working for a small IT company and one of our processes involves lots of IP resolutions. As I understand it, it is very time consuming and we're looking into setting up some kind of DNS server that can be working (and storing) on these requests 24/7.

Unfortunately I do not know too much about setting up a DNS server or if there is anything I should be aware of for this case...

Do I need a dedicated machine or can this run as a background process on a comp?

Do I need to be running Windows Server 2008?

Any help here, or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
TechShaman

I would never recommend you use a windows server for anything, ever.

It doesn't HAVE to be dedicated machine, but it SHOULD be, as it may be under a heavy load a times.

I would install BIND on a linux/BSD box:

Oh, I forgot to add, look for 'CACHING BIND' or 'caching nameserver' to setup the reply cache.
