I have a old game i want to play. The CD is about 10 years old. It has some unreadable files on it. I got most of it copied to a folder on my D drive. I copied it by booting up with a 98 boot disk selecting CD-Rom support drive letter was G
so i typed copy G:\ D:\
It only copied a few files. How can i copy all files? I have copied more files in windows but it an error it can't read the CD. So i would like to try to copy all the files in DOS. I feel this is legal? The CD is not bootleg its the orignal CD its just an old CD. BTW the whole CD is 398 MB and i have 329 MB copied. After i get all copied i will burn to a CD and keep the orignal CD.

Thanks

You should be able to insert the CD, highlight all the files, then copy and paste to your D drive. You've said the CD has some unreadable files on it. That's probably caused by a damaged CD, not corrupt files. If the CD is damaged, the file copy will stop.

I have tried what you said. Thats why i need to copy the rest or try to recopy the whole CD in DOS. It may not even copy in DOS i feel its worth a try. I really would love to play this game again. I installed 98 on this computer just to play old games on. If it does enot work then i will buy another copy but i would like to try this first. I just need to know the command to copy all files from DOS. Thanks for the reply.

Try XCOPY in DOS.

XCOPY G:\ D:\ /s /e

There are spaces in there!

The switches tell it to copy all subdirectories, even if empty.

XCOPY /? will help you on the command.

I have tried X Copy xcopy G:\ D:\/s/e with and without spaces i either get CDR101 Not reading drive F or G error message or Bad command or file name ive tried both drives thats why i got F or G. You say in DOS i tried that booting to DOS from windows still no luck i looked on the 98 boot disk and no such file called xcopy. Is xcopy a program or file i need to add?

XCOPY should be on the hard drive, I think it's located in the C:\windows\command folder in Win98.

Try this:

C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\XCOPY G:\ D:\ /S /E

Or search your hard drive and change the path above.

Sorry, I don't have 98 in front of me right now to look.

Try cleaning the CD and use a Laser cleaner CDROM on the CD Drive. You can find appropriate materials for Cleaning the CD and the Drive at local computer store.

It won't make any difference which OS you use if the Laser cannot read some of the files. Check the CD you want to copy for Scratches on both sides. The Back side is most critical.

Try to copy on a different Computer.

Yeah, make sure to get the cd as clean as you can. Try different cdroms. One cdrom may be able to read a going-bad cd better than another even though both are good.

Have you looked on ebay? You may be able to find a replacement disk there.

I would clean the CD and then if you have Nero or Roxio try copying CD to CD. If you only have one CD drive it automatically writes to the harddrive anyway.

Choose the option to verify the files. The drive will make multiple attempts to read any missing files.

One other option is to get an optical disk repair kit. If the disk has only minor scratches that don't go completely through the clear coating that may work.

Fiend and Stream Trophy Buck. I bought it
11-27-1998 with my old compaq with Windows 98 right after 98 was released. Its by Sierra Sports. I heard some of those old games are freeware now is that true? Oh and XCOPY is on the harddrive im about to try copying. I haven't used 98 in a while and i may have used XCOPY before just couldn't remember if it was on the bootdisk or not. Maybe they should have put it on the 98 bootdisk.

It's here with a lot of 5 other games:

http://cgi.ebay.com/LOT-OF-6-VINTAG...

If you don't want to buy the whole lot and it doesn't sell you might contact the seller and see if he'll set up a buy-it-now for just that one cd.

What country are you in?

Try cleaning the CD. As long as the top isn't damaged, you *should* be able to clean the underside & get it to work. There are plenty of regular household products that will do the trick. I've used Brasso before, toothpaste also works. Wipe from the center outward, do NOT go in circles around the disk. Afterwards, you can rinse it under the faucet & dry with a soft cloth.

If you want to copy the game to a specific folder, create the folder in Windows ahead of time. For example, create a new folder in the D:\ partition named "GAME"

Then boot off a Win98 bootdisk, choose "with CD support", then at the A:\> type:

copy G:\*.* D:\GAME

EDIT: the above will only copy files...if there are also folders, try:

copy G:\ D:\GAME

or XCOPY as was explained in another response.

I didn't see anything in your replys that indicates that you Cleaned the CD Drive Lazer Lense. If you have another CD Drive, try it. Got nothin to loose.

Maybe you can borrow one from a friend.

Did you try OtheHill's link? The download file is tbuckdem.exe so it may be a demo version. But it's easy enough to check.

You've cleaned the cd and tried different cdroms. I think it's safe to assume you're not going to be able to get it copied as it is. As already mentioned you can try the repair kit but that won't fix any damaged data areas. And the kit will probably cost more than just buying the ebay lot.

Christopher

When you purchased the original CD what you bought was a license to use that game. That license is still valid. The CD is simply the media to allow you to play the game. It is perfectly legal for you to acquire a copy of the same game and play it under your original license. This is a part of the fair use doctrine.

Therefore downloading a copy of the game is OK IMO. The caution I expressed in my post above with a link to a download was simply a warning to be careful of what you download. There are alot of evil people in this world that take pleasure in messing with other folks computers. That said you can scan for viruses before installing and verify the file size from your original CD.

Google for the game, download and enjoy.

BTW, I am not a gamer so I'm not sure it always applies but with ALL software I buy the very first thing I do is burn a copy. Then I install using the copy and store the original for safekeeping.

This method has an added advantage. I had occasion to build a system a few years ago using a student copy of WinXP. The software was legally purchased from Newegg by the student. I proceeded to perform my usually ritual of burning a copy. The burning process kept hanging due to a read error.

Newegg eventually had to replace the defective CD. Had I simply installed from the CD I may had ended up with a corrupted install.
