Reply: There is a bug in windows 95 that causes this problem when you try to install on a CPU faster than 350 Mhz. A patch is available from Microsoft to solve this problem. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192841 You have to boot up in safe mode to install it. If it still failed to boot into safe mode the next step was to under-clock the CPU to it ran at under 350 MHz. It would then boot to allow you to install the patch. How you are going to under-clock a 2Ghz CPU to 300 MHz I do not know. Stuart

Reply: ^ I doubt the above link applies here, since that is specific to AMD processors, assuming the OP's specs are correct. A P4 2.0 GHz should have no problems running Windows 95. The processor speed only becomes an issue after 2.1 GHz. The problem sounds more like a real mode driver (although it could be something else, like a corrupt system file) that is loading from CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT. If you can get into safe mode or even just MS-DOS mode, then post your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT here, and someone may be able to spot the problem.

Reply: Hi, When I went to open my CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT in MS-DOS EDITOR, both files were blank.

Reply: Peculiar. It is rare for both files to be blank on Windows 95. Typically, there is at least a path statement in one of them, so I suspect they have been moved or deleted somehow. Try the following to search for those two: cd \ dir config.* /a /s dir autoexec.* /a /s
Since protection errors can happen several different ways, see if this Microsoft article helps.
